Whatever
style of door you wish to fit, the procedure is the same, though minor differences between some external doors may show themselves. Two good-quality 100mm butt hinges are enough to support a standard door, but if you are hanging a heavy hardwood door you should add a third (central) hinge.

All doors are fairly heavy, and as it is necessary to try a door in a frame several times to get the right fit you will find that the job goes much more quickly if you have a helper working with you.

Fitting a door

Before attaching the hinges to a new door make sure that it fits nicely into its frame.

It should have a clearance of 2mm at the top and sides and should clear the floor by at least 6mm.

As much as 12mm may be required for a carpeted floor.

Measure the height and width of the door opening and the depth of the rebate in the door frame into which the door must fit. Choose a door of the right thickness and, if you cannot get one that will fit exactly, one that is large enough to be cut down.

Cutting to  size

Some doors are supplied with "horns", extensions to their stiles which protect the corners while the doors are in storage.

Cut these off with a saw (1) before starting to trim the door to size.

Transfer the measurements from the frame to the door, making necessary allowance for the clearances all round. To reduce the width of the door stand it on its edge with the latch stile upwards while it is steadied in a portable vice or workmate. Plane the stile down to the marked line working only on one side if a small amount is to be taken off. If a lot has to be removed, take some off each side. This is important with panel doors to preserve the symmetry.

If you need to take off more than 6mm to reduce the height of the door, remove it with a saw first and finish off with a plane. Otherwise plane the waste off (2). The plane must be sharp to deal with the end grain of the stiles. Work from each corner towards the centre to avoid "chipping out" the corners.

Try the door in the frame, supporting the door on shallow wedges (3). If it still doesn't fit take it down and remove more wood where appropriate.
